Fundraising For Friends of ANCHOR
26th August 2021
When a valued friend and colleague told Chris Carr she had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, he was determined to help her in any way he could. Dusting off his bike and squeezing into some lycra, he's doing just that by cycling around the north east in aid of Friends of ANCHOR.
Chris explains, "Caitlin and I have worked side by side for over 3 years and we're great friends as well as work colleagues. I felt shocked and powerless when the news broke, and pondered what else I could offer beyond moral support.
"One of the first things I did was venture out on my bike to clear my head. It dawned on me how spread out my TMM Recruitment colleagues are geographically, living across the region from Ellon down to Portlethen and Alford to the City Centre. A quick search on Google Maps led to the realisation that cycling from my house to Caitlin's via the homes of every single one of our colleagues would clock up 100 miles.
"My fitness isn't what it once was but I've covered more than 600 miles in my training outings. Put me on a bike and distract me with beautiful scenery, dodgy drivers and the thought of Caitlin undergoing intense cancer treatment, and these aging legs will pedal pretty hard!
"Caitlin's courage and positive outlook motivated me to get on my bike, and I'm really looking forward to raising as much as we can for her nominated charity. Friends of ANCHOR have done a brilliant job of making Caitlin feel welcome and as comfortable as possible during her treatment at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary's ANCHOR Unit, their support has made a massive difference to her life this year.
Naomi Forrest, Friends of ANCHOR, "We're so grateful to Caitlin for nominating Friends of ANCHOR, and to Chris for putting this thoughtful idea into action, to raise awareness and funds for the charity. Our fundraisers play a vital role in helping us ensure patients in the north east receive the best care from diagnosis to treatment and beyond."
Chris is hitting the road early on Friday 27th August, and aims to conclude his 100-mile trail in time to put his young kids to bed at night.
